About Stereophile

Every month Stereophile magazine offers authoritative reviews, informed recommendations, helpful advice, and controversial opinions, all stemming from the revolutionary idea that audio components should be judged on how they reproduce music.

Increasingly a magazine for the elites

While it may amuse many people to read in-depth reviews of products that are beyond the reach of middle class people, with a questionable performance/cost ratio, this seems to be the direction the magazine is increasingly heading. The music review section is also short and tends to focus on the relatively obscure. The bright spot is Herb Reichart's column, which reviews not only expensive gear, but also kits and modestly priced items. But it's hard to take a magazine seriously that puts $250,000 turntables on the cover. It may be worth the low subscription price for the few great sensible products they review, like the Klipsch bookshelf speakers or the small Magnepan ribbon speakers. But there is too much talk about the stratospheric high end.

Also, to be clear, I ordered a magazine renewal through discountmags, and the magazine has ceased arriving in the mailbox. Another annoyance.

Not what I am going to spend

Ok, not exactly poor. I am a relatively high net worth individual (buying my second "for fun" aircraft), but I'm not going to spend $500,000 on a turntable. Was looking for a mag that reviewed more reasonably priced gear.

UNreal world product reviews

I was a hard core hobbyist audiophile about 40-50 years ago, building & modifying Dynaco, Hafler, Heath (test gear) etc. I've continued to listen over the years, but haven't been able to spend the time building stuff or keeping up with current tech. I'd never read Stereophile, but saw the DM listing & thought I'd dip a toe in today's waters; hoping to see current state of audiophile art. Unfortunately, most of the stuff reviewed approaches a year's salary for a typical working stiff, and while subjective listening experiences can be helpful (after you get a feel for the reviewer's ear), the absence of objective, quantified data in the hardware reviews would make them useless to me, if they weren't already useless because I'll never own a $2000 phono cartridge or a half million $ turntable.

The music reviews are a bit more useful; reviewing performances is always a subjective thing and we all understand that.
