At 7 a.m. Angela Potts strolled into Sheriff Charles Jones’ office and dropped into a chair. “You’re here early,” she said, and stopped to squint at him. “Why are your ears pink?”
The sheriff sighed. “I was ironing my uniform shirt last night and got a phone call.” He held the inside of his fist up against his right ear to demonstrate.
“What? You held a hot iron, instead of your phone, against your head?”
“Just for a second.”
“Why’s the other ear pink, too?”
“Well, I had to call the doctor, didn’t I?”
Angela stared at him a moment before she realized he was grinning like the court jester.
“Old joke,” he said.
“I ought to bash you with this purse,” she growled. “What really happened?”
He touched his ears. “Guess I spent too much time in Bonnie…
