Mr Selfridge founded his store in 1909, following in some famous footsteps… M&S: ‘Don’t ask the price, it’s a penny’ advertised one of the stalls run by Michael Marks in the 1800s. The store we know today was born when Marks went into partnership with Thomas Spencer, a cashier from Yorkshire in 1894. Harvey Nichols: The opening of Benjamin Harvey’s linen shop in 1831 launched one of the UK’s premier fashion retailers. Harvey died, leaving it to his wife, who went into business with James Nichols. There are now 16 stores. Fenwick: In 1882, John James Fenwick set up shop in a residential area of Newcastle. After his son joined the ranks, the Fenwicks acquired a store in London.
