For years, young people stumbling along the streets clutching bottles of booze defined Broken Britain, but new research shows there’s been a rise in Millennials going teetotal – and women over 40 are drinking more. According to the guidelines, we shouldn’t be consuming any more than 14 units a week – six pints of beer or six glasses of wine. But in 2017 there were 1.1 million alcohol-related hospital admissions, and 46% of patients were aged between 55 and 74. So why do women reach for the booze?
