I found Wiltshire Life by accident. We have embraced it with love and conviction. We are losing it with regret and despair. This is the last issue my company will publish and unless something magical happens, like finding a new owner, these pages and the accompanying Wiltshire Life awards on March 8, 2024, are likely to be its very last gasps for breath as the brand’s life ebbs away. I settled in Wiltshire about 25 years ago after my father’s death because I needed to be closer to my mother who lived in Falmouth in Cornwall. At the time I was living in London. I had a shop where I used to sell antiques on the Portobello Road, so I came to Wiltshire completely out of the blue not knowing anybody. I first settled in Froxfield and had an antiques shop in Marlborough. I am driving up a steep hill, heading away from the roar of the M4 and the twinkling lights of Swindon, when a simple wooden sign looms up in my headlights: “Salthrop House”. The drive beyond the white wooden gates gives way to gravel gently rolling towards a dolls house of a manor, all Bath stone, bay windows and a blaze of welcoming light. “What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare?” These words, by the poet WH Davies, set the course of photographer Hilary Stock’s life. Oft repeated by her grandmother, who painted, and her mother, a botanical artist, Hilary imbibed a way of living that, “made me take time to look at things. “Once I started looking, the camera was my medium. Her Majesty Queen Camilla paid tribute to staff and volunteers helping those who have suffered domestic abuse to rebuild their lives during a visit to mark 50 years of their charity. The Queen was at Swindon Domestic Abuse Support Service to honour the charity’s half a century of work and to officially unveiled the new name of the refuge building, Jenni’s House, chosen by current residents in honour of the charity’s founder, Jenni Manners MBE. Within the space of a few days the Melksham Fire Station manager refereed his first Premiership football match when he took charge of Sheffield United v Luton Town on Boxing Day and was awarded a King’s Fire Service Medal in the King’s New Year Honours for his work in promoting inclusivity. Initially I thought writing about my Wiltshire would be such a simple task; after all I have lived here most of my life. North, south and west of the county, I have had homes in them all. Re-fashioning a stitch through time

As a repair job, it is rudimentary at best, the jagged rent in the sturdy grey fabric is hauled haphazardly back together with glaringly unmatched white thread. But it is what that repair represents that has inspired the young people behind Salisbury Museum’s newest attraction. The repair in question is on an army great coat from the museum’s collection, worn by cavalryman Howard Harris at the Battle of Inkerman in November 1854 during the Crimean War. The coat was ripped apart by a molten fragment from an exploding shell but its thickness protected its wearer, who christened it his ‘old friend’. They both survived many more battles together. Almost 170 years later the coat and its story seized the attention of the museum’s Fashioning Our World project, a two-and-ahalf year…

“Getting to know those Israelis and Palestinians who work tirelessly for peace and justice” Standing in the North Porch to greet people as they left the Cathedral after our Christmas services, I was struck by a number of things. One was the huge variety of Christmas jumpers being worn. Who knew there were so many styles? One was the gaudy array of festive headgear on display. Sparkly flashing antlers definitely led the field. One was the kindness expressed by most of our attendees. The service was ‘beautiful’; the choir were ‘amazing’; the building looked ‘absolutely wonderful’. But most striking of all was the sheer number. Nearly 3,000 people worshipped at the carol services; a similar number at the Christmas Eve Family Services; nearly 1,000 turned out for ‘Midnight Mass’. Christmas…

Forging life-long friendships

When Wiltshire Life was first published in 1946, the classroom was a very different place, with boys and girls mainly being educated in single sex schools. Although this is still an option, over the decades we have seen a seed of change. We have witnessed co-education at sixth form which has, progressed in many schools to welcoming boys and girls for the duration of their time at school. The choices and opportunities in terms of subjects studied has also grown and evolved, it’s no longer a case of needlework and cooking for girls and science and engineering for boys… Importantly, what hasn’t changed are the friendships made during time spent at school. Sharing experiences, adventures, laughter and tears – growing-up alongside each other, this is where life-long bonds are formed…

Assistant director of music John Challenger’s duties involve rehearsing and training choristers alongside the director of music, David Halls, playing the Cathedral’s magnificent Father Willis Organ for services and concerts, devising performances and outreach events and coordinating chorister recruitment. John has also set up the Cathedral’s own record label, which now boasts four albums including the recent Christmas album sung by the Cathedral choir. The Year 8 pupil was praised by judges Ken Burton, Wynne Evans and Laura Wright for her ability to tell a story through her performance when they chose her as the narrow winner in the junior category of the popular competition run by Songs of Praise and BBC TV. Her performance at the competition in Manchester was broadcast on BBC Two. A former chorister at Wells Cathedral, Belinda is now part of the school’s celebrated vocal programme. It helps many former choristers build on their early musical experiences and prepares them for the next stage of their musical lives as soloists or professional choral singers of the future. As I’m sure many readers will know, the Chalke History Festival is the biggest, most celebrated history festival in the world, and this year it will run from June 24 to 30. You may have also noticed that the event will now have a new name, marking an exciting moment in the festival’s life. For a week every June, this hugely popular event takes place just outside Salisbury at the height of midsummer in the stunning Chalke Valley countryside. We could not have a more beautiful setting, with the festival site located on a working farm on the southern edge of Broad Chalke, surrounded by animals and nature. More than just a hike… Around 60 Dauntsey’s Year 8 pupils set off from school on their Midwinter Expedition at the end of January – putting their organisation, resilience and teamwork to the test. Over the course of two days, the pupils hiked around 30km, staying overnight at a local Scout Centre. The pupils hiked in groups of six to eight – each group accompanied by an adult – and were responsible for navigating their way through the Wiltshire countryside and back to Dauntsey’s at the end of the adventure. One of the most thoughtful gifts I ever received after getting married was 12 wrapped bottles of wine. The card with it read ‘Open 1 each month on your wedding anniversary’. What a monthly treat in the early days of marriage when money was tight. Trout and quinoa parcels Serves 1 for illustrative purposes only INGREDIENTS • 1 trout or salmon fillet• 50g quinoa• ½ onion• ½ stick celery• 1 clove garlic• ½ lemon• 2-3 sundried tomatoes• 2-3 broccoli florets• 2-3 spoons sweetcorn (optional)• Salt and pepper• 100 ml vegetable or chicken stock• Small handful watercress, chopped• 1 tsp dried herbs or 1 tbsp fresh herbs – dill/parsley• Square of baking parchment approx. 30cm square 1. A weed is a plant growing where it is not wanted. Often they easily outcompete our cultivated plants. So what should we do about them? Well, not all need to be totally eradicated. Let’s reconsider a few, and maybe even find space for some. Hairy bittercress First, there are weeds and weeds. For instance, I used to weed hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta). Now I think I might have a place for it in my garden. With a distinctive rosette of ground-hugging, faintly hairy leaves and tiny white flowers, it is innocuous. Thriving in disturbed ground, it is the bane of many gardeners, surviving the harshest frosts. I don’t think there has ever been a greater adventure story written than The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. A tale of love, lust, deceit, betrayal and revenge it follows the misfortune of Edmond Dantes – falsely accused of treason and imprisoned in the Chateau d’If – his escape, treasure hunting and ultimately revenge upon his accusers.
