“it proved easier, more economical and faster than any of the other forms of transport” Some years ago, as editor of VW Motoring, I was asked to take part in a BBC radio programme entitled Beetlemania. Original, eh? But as you’ve probably guessed already, it was about the car, not the Fab Four. The producer asked me about any unusual tasks that Beetles had proved capable of, and I immediately came up with something I recalled appearing in the magazine some years earlier. Checking back for this piece, I found a feature in the July 1963 issue of what was still called Safer Motoring back then, concerning a Beetle that had been put to the most gruelling work imaginable at the ‘bottom of the world’ – Antarctica!
