‘Old School’ Westfalia Bay

The history of our bus is varied. I heard that it used to belong to a soccer player who lived in it for a while, and a tale of a cross country trip that was taken in it. Since we’ve owned it, we have been to numerous car shows with our car club Kahiko Kula and enjoy that immensely, but taking it camping is our joy. Although I was at the Bundwehr myself, I never had the pleasure of eating from a T3 field kitchen. MAN trucks were used as field kitchens, at least in northern Germany. But you never stop learning and the Bundeswehr had a lot of vehicles hidden in depots. The T3 box van with sales flap was used for many things in Germany, including mobile shops, ice cream vans, coffee and cake stalls etc. and I have enclosed a couple of examples. The ice cream van is still in use, but the others are now no longer used…

Fix faded paintwork Difficulty Rating Ultraviolet rays from sunlight can dull the shiny exterior paintwork of a Bus, especially with colours such as red. The paintwork can often be revived by removing a very thin layer of it using a cutting compound or a similar product (T-Cut, Color Magic, Light Magic), after which, polish and a wax can be applied to help protect the paintwork. Regularly washing the paintwork to keep dirt away and storing the Bus inside a garage or out of direct sunlight will also help to preserve its paintwork and reduce the risk of it fading again in the future. On 8 March 1950 the Volkswagen plant began full production of the Type 2, which quickly became the darling of the commercial trades. As did this panel van with chassis number 20-1880, which was built on 5 August 1950. For its new owner it was something significant, the first Bulli in Lower Saxony and for 23 years it drove around the narrow lanes of Hildesheim before going into retirement when the company sold it to a collector. From 1973 to 1992 the Bulli spent its time with various VW enthusiasts. The last owner tried to the sell it via a magazine run by the ‘Brezelfenstervereinigung e.V.’ fan club without success. He drove us straight over to meet the guys at Wolfsburg West. The company headquarters in Corona stocks over 6,000 parts. We were introduced to Rich who was happy to show us around the workshop. A 2.6 litre T3! This month’s brochure, a sixteen page affair including two fold outs, features outstandingly sharp imagery with imaginative, some would say stunning, backgrounds. Camping Amongst the Ponies

We spent a good few years camping down in the New Forest. There’s some spectacular scenery and the whole ‘rights of common pasture’ thing with semi feral ponies just wandering about freely on the heathland and forest makes it a place like no other. It’s possible to waste entire days just walking… There are parts with restricted access, but essentially if you find a path, you can follow it. We learned that it was time well spent to study google maps and print a few pages before leaving home. In my opinion, the only problem with camping in this part of Hampshire was the campsites. We’ve finally managed some camping! First impressions were “WOW”. Not it’s amazing wow, more it’s heavy wow. I was out when it was delivered and my neighbour took it in. I’m pretty sure he used a forklift to get it through the house to the garage… Fast forward to Petruth Paddocks campsite in Cheddar. After I’d heaved it out of the bus, I set about erecting that which had now become nicknamed “The Behemoth”. It’s easy to get out the bag and unroll and comes complete with a dual action pump (inflate / deflate) plenty of pegs and a mallet. The Covid shut down has had a massive effect on everyone for different reasons, for us playing catchup on four months of lost time is nigh on impossible. We have a great team at the workshop and for the last few weeks everyone has been working flat out with early starts and late finishes every day, and even extra days. We have specialised in split screen buses for many years and have only worked on a few bays, but as the vehicles get older, bay window buses have risen in value and it now makes economic sense to repair/restore these as well. The workshop has three splits and three bays being worked on at the moment, but still the value of the vehicles dictates the amount of work that can…

It was very strange standing, shrouded in early morning mist, in the middle of a field thinking about it, but not half as strange as this year has been so far… I had the idea of hosting the Crew’s first Camp Out a few months ago when all the shows and events were cancelled, but I was really missing seeing all the people that I’ve made friends with over the years through WBC. Although events were banned for groups of over 100 people, it was still possible to camp on organised sites. I mentioned this to CJ Smith when we met up in our buses for the first time since 2019. Evocative words, but sadly for most folk ‘sitting around the campfire’ simply won’t be happening on the majority of campsites. It’s a blokey thing really, my wife always worries that I’m going to set myself on fire & burn the awning down to the ground. And that’s just while I’m firing up a gas barbie! If the hardcore camping forums are to be believed, for some people, if they can’t build a fire on their pitch, it’s not worth them going. It was all down to her family taking her from their hometown of Scarborough to visit lots of VW shows from a very young and impressionable age. For the past twenty odd years, her birthday and Christmas presents have always been splitscreen memorabilia. Sitting on the Dock of the Bay…

This year’s events, or rather lack of events, has led to several people who had worked hard through the winter on bus projects feeling rather anti-climatic in the springtime. Not only could they not ‘launch’ the new build they had spent so much time on, but gone was the opportunity to use and enjoy it for a while too. One such person affected by this was Matt Pinker from Faringdon in Oxfordshire. Matt and his family have owned their 1972 crossover bus for several years now and it has been worked on and improved constantly, but during the winter of 2019, Matt decided to take the bus apart and embarked on a substantial refresh.
