AT A RECENT DESIGN CONFERENCE, I moderated a panel about outdoor living with landscape designer Wambui Ippolito, designer Laura Kirar, and Arteriors VP of marketing Barb Fuller. Beyond the first look at Arteriors’ new outdoor collection and the extraordinary outdoor living spaces designed by Kirar and Ippolito, what stuck with me most was something Ippolito said about her landscape design practice: that she leans on Appleton’s prospect-refuge theory as a guide. The theory posits that we are drawn to spaces that provide clear views of our surroundings as well as a sense of enclosure. a WALK on the WILD SIDE

SCALING VINES Twisted, and never timid, herbaceous ivy and climbing flowers arrive in sweeping, all-over pattern. Playful shades of blue, green, and yellow (as in Sanderson’s Sycamore and Oak hand-painted botanical, top center) give a lightness of spirit to the notably denser motifs, with white linen and cotton grounds appearing as sunlight filtering through the forest. ROUGH-HEWN BY CELTS in the first millennium and inscribed with their ancient ogham alphabet, way stones stood as markers of place, of personage, and of neighborly greeting. Now they take up fresh residence in the house and garden as the inspiration for the Fearn collection of stone planters from Northern Ireland–based furniture maker Orior. Fogo Island’s CRAFT AWAKENING

FOGO ISLAND IS A WINDY PLACE. There’s muscle to the gusts that sweep across the island in Newfoundland along the easternmost coast of Canada and in fact North America. The right time. In the case of David Harber, England’s archdruid of garden statuary, those words should be engraved on one of his armillary spheres. There’s no doubt the time is right now for Harber, whose sculptures—from classical sundials to modernist geometries—are future heirlooms and adorn esteemed addresses like Eton College School, Windsor Castle, and 12 Oxford and Cambridge colleges. Queen Elizabeth II on two occasions unveiled Harber’s works, along with one debuted by then-Prince Charles, and at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Harber’s exhibit exerts dynastic command over awards. CALL IT FATE OR NATURAL INSTINCT. But years spent observing artists in studios and strolling galleries, coupled with a family business in rough diamonds, culminates in Studio Renn, the Mumbai, India–based jewelry design practice founded in 2018 by Rahul and Roshni Jhaveri. “The studio was born when the worlds of art and gems collided,” says Rahul, creative director and one half of the husband-and-wife duo. “We approach jewelry not for jewelry’s sake but as a medium of expression.” In diamond-studded seed leaves and rose gold citrus rinds, the pair challenge conventional notions of what fine jewelry should be and how it should be made. Los Angeles, California A Triumph of Tropicalia Fanciful objets d’art and lush, leafy “walls” animate a sunken California hideaway into a playground of discovery. Striking Reflections of the Landscape

Bridgehampton, New York WE NEVER APPROACH a project as a house with a garden surrounding it,” says Ed Hollander, principal of Manhattan-based Hollander Design Landscape Architects. “For us, the landscape is a continuation of the architecture.” His firm already had a decade-long relationship with this Bridgehampton, New York, property when new owners bought it and began building a modern home to complement the existing traditional guesthouse. An Epic Comeback Story

San Gabriel Valley, California GABRIELA YARIV roots her landscape designs in knowledge and experience, but sometimes kismet comes into play. She first encountered this Joseph Kucera–designed home and its European-influenced garden while perusing real estate listings. “I noticed it because my parents once lived in a Kucera house,” she says of the California architect noted for his 1920s and ’30s–era Period Revival homes. This one formerly belonged to Winifred Starr Dobyns, author of the seminal 1931 book California Gardens. Yariv even popped by the open house, noting the then-fading garden would be a dream project. Two weeks later, she got a cold call from the new owner, who wanted to hire her to carefully rehabilitate it. To do so accurately would require some forensic gardening. A Grand Salute to the Countryside

Dorset, England THERE’S A REASON Dorset, England, is recognized as one of 46 regions in the United Kingdom as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty—its emerald expanse is archetypal British countryside. And it’s there that a 7.3-acre estate, complete with medieval moat, offered landscape architects Hugo Bugg and Charlotte Harris of London-based Harris Bugg Studio the opportunity to work in such a pastoral jewel. The property owners turned to the repeat RHS Chelsea Flower Show winners to reimagine the 1.7-acre garden after an addition to the existing historic farmhouse was complete and to “bring the rolling hills and meadows closer to the house,” says Bugg. FAR FROM THE TROPICAL CLIME of Bali or Brazil, it’s not very common—let alone practical—to build a home in the United States in which the barriers between indoors and outdoors can almost completely disappear. But that is precisely the type of house a couple of loyal Michael S. Smith clients found in a lushly verdant corner of Los Angeles’s Holmby Hills neighborhood. The Original SOCIAL NETWORK

I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN FASCINATED WITH SOCIAL INSECTS. I’m not sure when or how it began, only that I was in my early 20s when I read Journey to the Ants by biologists Bert Hölldobler and Edward O. Wilson, which was equal parts scientific exploration and autobiography.
