Ancient Greens Hicks declared that “even the most ordinary, everyday objects benefit from careful arrangement” (citrus, utensils, gum boots!), and he harmonized color and material like instruments in an orchestra. Here, pottery, oxidized metal, and carved stone appear almost archaeological in provenance. Patinaed bronze and verdigris copper marry gritty olives with emerald; glazed bowls and marbled paperweights swirl in shades from seafoam to sienna—like abstract art unearthed after centuries. Inventive Beadwork From fine glass and metallic borders inspired by palace decoration (The Vale London) to tiny French knots that appear as sparkling beads (de Gournay), the latest embroideries lose none of their sizzle in this revival. The PAINTED GARDEN

CLAUDE MONET FAMOUSLY QUIPPED THAT PERHAPS he owed his career to flowers. Indeed capturing the garden’s ephemeral beauty has long enchanted artists, from French Impressionists like Monet who thrived in plein air to the Dutch Masters to light chasers of the Scandinavian Skagen colony. To be sure, the decorative arts world shared in the spoils, for centuries producing virtuoso botanical scenes across walls and fabrics. But over time these brushstrokes faded into a boon of technology. Printers roared; artists went back to their easels. Today a resurgence is well underway. Just after World War II, British decorator John Fowler bought an antique stool. On top was a piece of Brussels Weave carpet that looked like mossy woodland floor, and he set out to reproduce it. At the time the patterned flatweave floor covering first made by 18th-century Flemish weavers had fallen out of fashion; neutral solids ruled the day. But starting with the stool-inspired Mossy, Fowler revived the colorful carpets—and made them integral to his famed English country house look. Crouching on a hillside by the edge of a rice field in southern Japan, I hold the arrival of spring in the palm of my hand. The messenger is a tsukushi horsetail—a slender shoot barely three inches long that resembles a mini tortoiseshell-hued spear of asparagus. TECHNOLOGY MIGHT HAVE given us the smart home, but it takes a human being to develop a home that’s wise. Consider the residence of designer Jane Schwab and her husband, Nelson: It reflects not only her extensive experience in the interiors business but also her creative intuition, courage, and self-knowledge. For the Charlotte, North Carolina–based Schwab, the decision to relocate from a traditional 1920s house nestled among gardens to the top floor of a 1970s co-op building didn’t come easily.
