Being a long, linear route, the Roman road walk requires a little organisation. Trail parked in Ambleside, took the 555 bus to Windermere (£4 per adult), the TransPennine Express train service from Windermere to Penrith (changing at Oxenholme where the Station Inn is just 10 minutes up the road if you have a wait between trains – £15.70 per adult), and pre-booked a taxi from Penrith to Brougham Castle (£8), before making the long walk back to the car. Once high on the route, access to water is limited. Be sure to take plenty with you and consider carrying a means of treating and purifying wild water (above photo).
