Jolly boating weather is any weather there is. Dim grey slopes rising into black mist, and white breakers hissing by: this is fun on the voyage, and also for the shoreline path, which is the first walk here. On a better day, the ferry sets you up for Striding Edge and a long, long day along the Dodds. Then again, the mid-level path can be the top form of fun: take in the knobby summits of Sheffield Pike and Gowbarrow, and teeter around the steep head of Glencoynedale. What unites all three routes is Ullswater: seven and a half miles of wiggly water, and green woodlands, and high stony slopes – seen from alongside, from above, and also from aboard Lady Dorothy.
