Now why is it, exactly, they call ‘em the Grey Corries? On the high hill line above Glen Spean, this is a question you absolutely never hear. Gabbro makes Skye’s Black Cuillin. Granite makes Yosemite. The stuff called quartzite is off-white and shiny, blocky and smooth. Make it into mountains and what you get is the Grey Corries range. The ridge sides are high, steep scree. The tops are smooth slabs, like a city walkway high in the sky. Or else they’re blocky, rectangular boulders. And the corries are – there’s only one way to say it – grey.
