Ben Hiant

Way out west on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, the hill (or is it a mountain?) of Ben Hiant offers a short but outstanding walk, reckons Keith Fergus.

Although there is no universal definition of what a mountain is in Britain, it regarded by many as a landform more than 600m above sea-level. This means that a number of rounded lumps up and down the country are classed as mountains yet are more hill-like in their nature. Ben Hiant, which rises above the Ardnamurchan Peninsula on the most westerly point of the British mainland, is only 528m tall yet this remarkable, rocky peak is undeniably mountainous in character. Ben Hiant is the highest point of the peninsula and dominates the view above the remote village of Kilchoan.
