Bowfell

There's an entertaining scrambly route with some excellent views up Thorn Crag on the way to Bowfell, says Chiz Dakin .

As you round a bend in Great Langdale, the sudden view of the towering Langdale Pikes rising from the valley floor takes the breath away. The secret to such magnificence lies in their naturally pleasing summit shapes and an unusual perspective which allows you to take in the whole mountain complete with spiky rocky tops (definition of Stickle) in one glance. How many Langdale Pikes are there? Among writers, Alfred Wainwright suggests three, Mark Richards four and Bill Birkett five. This route offers great views of all, and finds entertaining broken scrambling up Birkett’s ‘fifth pike’ of Thorn Crag.
