Great End

Are you experienced? If so, Sean McMahon shows how you can reach Great End and Scafell Pike using a variable route that is out of the ordinary.

The Scafell massif is a Mecca for fellwalkers, and the crowds often seen at the summit of Scafell Pike reflect the fact that this is the highest point in England. Away from the main paths, there is a fabulous and little-used way to reach Great End, which lies at the end of this group of fells. Here I offer two ways of ascent, neither of which is for novices: via Skew Gill (only for the very experienced scrambler) and via The Band (only for the experienced walker). From Wasdale, this walk is almost immediately off the beaten track and the path climbing the fellside is wonderfully graded.
