There are pros and cons to both designs, with lids having the advantage that there are no zips to break, you can overstuff the bag, and the lid often has an excellent pocket for smaller items like maps and guidebooks. There may be a ‘snow-lock’ extension under the lid with a drawcord to provide further protection of the contents. By comparison, a zipped opening is quick and easy to use, and creates a neat profile.
