More usually associated with Everest, K2 or Kangchenjunga, Alan Hinkes still adores the UK hills. After a day out on Blencathra, Trail sat down with the only Brit to summit all 14 of the planet’s peaks over 8000m to discuss whether mountains are ‘tall’ or ‘high’, the physical geography of the Lake District, and how it’s simply great to be alive.

Given what you’ve done in the Himalayas and the Karakoram, is there anything left in the UK to excite you? “The UK definitely excites me. It always has. There are lots of adventures to do. Lots of places I’ve not been. Even if it’s just going up Helvellyn on a different day in different weather, it’s great. Sometimes – and I know it sounds a bit pretentious – it’s just great to be alive when sadly a lot of my friends have been killed. I do appreciate being alive and I do appreciate the British landscape. Particularly northern England.
