On one side: mountains. On the other, rolling hills and deep blue water. Ben Lomond sits right between them, perched betwixt the Lowlands and the Highlands. Find a topographical map of the UK, take a good look at Scotland and, after first clocking the mighty cleft of the Great Glen in the north, you’ll probably notice something about the land between Arran in the south-west and Stonehaven on the north-east coast. It’s marked by an unusual crease: you could streak a pen across the map here without having to wiggle it once. Above that line are red mountains, below it, rough green countryside.
