One is bought by Charlie, a drifter, but it soon develops a crush on his girlfriend. “On every other page there is a felicitous sentence or arresting observation,” said The Daily Telegraph. McEwan, 71, remains as sharp as ever. Appeasing Hitler by Tim Bouverie Bodley Head £20 (£16.99) This “elegantly written” book by a “rising” historian dissects Britain’s attempts to appease the Nazis, said The Times.
