AUSTRIA An ugly case of gesture politics Der Standard (Vienna) Austria has chosen an odd way to stand up against human rights abuses, says Tarafa Baghajati. In protest at the imprisonment in Saudi Arabia of Murtaja Qureiris, it plans to close Vienna’s King Abdullah Centre, set up in 2011 by Austria, Spain and the Saudis to promote religious dialogue. Qureiris was just 13 when he was arrested for demonstrating against the Saudi government. Now we learn he faces execution. The international outrage is completely justified – every effort should be made to secure his release. But though there might be some point in shutting the King Abdullah Centre if it was a Saudi propaganda vehicle, that’s not remotely the case: besides fostering contacts between the faiths, it manages refugee programmes and peace initiatives…
