Shakopee, Minnesota Amazon walkouts: Thousands of Amazon workers staged strikes and protests to coincide with this week’s “Prime Day”, the company’s annual sales bonanza. The walkouts took place at fulfilment centres in the US, and in several European countries. The biggest was in Shakopee, Minnesota, where engineers from the company’s Seattle HQ joined in the walkout. Amazon last year raised its minimum wage to $15 an hour in the US, but the strikers said their protest was not about pay, but about the gruelling rate at which they must “stow” and “pick” goods – unpack and retrieve them – to avoid dismissal. “You have to beat the machine,” said Faizal Dualeh, a Somali immigrant. “It’s like a nightmare, all these machines telling you your rate is down.” Washington DC Anti-migrant measures: The Trump…
