Strasbourg, France EU president confirmed: Ursula von der Leyen has won a confirmatory vote to become the next President of the European Commission, replacing Jean-Claude Juncker. The German defence minister, who will take up her post on 1 November, was nominated to the role by EU leaders earlier this month. There was speculation that MEPs might refuse to confirm her appointment, owing to anger that their own “lead candidates” – put forward by blocs within the European Parliament – had been overlooked for the role. In the event, however, she scraped through the secret ballot with just nine more votes than required, having sought support from Eurosceptic and right-wing MEPs in Poland and Italy.
