A profound shift is under way in how America treats women who seek to end their pregnancies, says Mary Ziegler. For decades, anti-abortion groups have sought to portray these women as innocent victims in need of protection from the “abortion industry”. But in anticipation of the supreme court weakening, or removing, the constitutional right to abortion provided by Roe v. Wade, Republican controlled state legislatures are rushing to pass a wave of draconian anti-abortion bills, “some of them truly eye-popping”, that depict women as law-breakers rather than victims. Missouri alone has in recent weeks tried to limit out-of-state travel for abortion, and proposed allowing the delivery of abortion pills to be prosecuted under drug-trafficking laws.
