The world has turned its back on Russia. Even China is having second thoughts about giving its backing. That’s the gist of most coverage of the Ukraine war, says Edward Luce, and it’s dangerously naive. “Not for the first time, the West is mistaking its own unity for a global consensus.” While 141 nations may have voted at the UN to condemn Putin’s violation of international law, 35 others – including China, India, Vietnam, Iraq and South Africa; accounting for almost half the world’s population – abstained.
