Sunak under pressure

What happened Rishi Sunak was reported to be considering a second council tax rebate this week, following the backlash against his Spring Statement. The Chancellor’s mini-Budget last week included some measures to help the lower paid, such as a 5p cut per litre to fuel duty and a rise in the threshold for paying national insurance. But critics said the measures didn’t do enough to help families facing a record hit to living standards, and would be more than offset by frozen thresholds dragging millions of workers into higher tax bands. The Resolution Foundation think tank claimed that Sunak’s failure to increase welfare benefits in line with inflation would drive 1.3 million people below the poverty line.
