The idea behind the sandwich—two slices of bread or a split roll with a filling in between—may be simple. But it has inspired thousands of variations. Where did this portable, packable meal come from? Start of the sandwich As early as the first century BCE, a rabbi created a holiday tradition of placing nuts and apples between two pieces of matzah, a crisp type of bread. This combination can still be found on seder plates during Passover today. Sandwiches did not get their name until the 1700s, however. Legend has it that a British statesman, John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, loved to play cards. Instead of stopping his games to eat, he was said to request roast beef between slices of bread so he could enjoy his meal…
