Taking a giant leap

Solange Knowles is breaking barriers as a woman of color in music.

Many people know Solange Knowles as the younger sister of music icon Beyoncé. But the 36-year-old is an icon all on her own as an award-winning singer-songwriter and now a ballet composer. For the New York City Ballet’s Fall Fashion Gala, she composed an original score (instrumental music written for an artistic performance). The event, which debuts on September 28 at Lincoln Center in New York City, brings renowned choreographers and fashion designers together to produce an elaborate ballet performance. Knowles is the first Black American woman to compose an original score for the New York City Ballet.
