The Sound of Music is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year.

How did The Sound of Music become one of the most enduring films of all time? Let’s start at the very beginning. Inspired by a true story The Sound of Music is based on a 1949 memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria Augusta Trapp, the“real” Maria who is played by Julie Andrews in the film. Set in Austria in 1938, before World War II (1939–1945), The Sound of Music tells the story of a free-spirited aspiring nun who takes a job as a governess for a family with a strict widower father, Captain von Trapp (played by Christopher Plummer), and his seven children.
