Ceasefire begins in Middle East

After 15 months of war, a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas (a terrorist group based in the Palestinian territory of Gaza) began on January 19. A ceasefire is an end to fighting. The agreement has three phases. The first will last six weeks and include the release of 33 Israeli hostages who are being held by Hamas. Hamas is believed to have about 100 hostages. More than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners being held in Israeli jails will also be freed, and a flow of humanitarian aid will enter Gaza. Israel will begin to move its soldiers out of Gaza, and Palestinians who fled northern Gaza will be allowed to return home.
