Padma Venkatraman is the award-winning author of six books for children and young adults. Safe Harbor is the first one she has written that draws on her previous career as an oceanographer. The Week Junior spoke to her about the book. Why did you write this story? I wanted to write about science in a way that would be fun, lyrical, and beautiful. I was scared that I couldn’t do it because I had so many science facts in my head! What inspired you? I was walking along a beach in Rhode Island when I saw a seal in the sand.
