TENNIS On January 25, Madison Keys of the US won the women’s title at the Australian Open. Keys was seeded (ranked) 19th, and she upset the number one player, Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, in the final. It was Keys’ first major championship win. In the men’s singles final the next day, Jannik Sinner of Italy beat Alexander Zverev of Germany to win his second straight Australian Open title and third major title overall. COLLEGE BASKETBALL The last two women’s national champions faced off in a January 24 matchup. The second-ranked University of South Carolina beat the fifth-ranked Louisiana State University (LSU), 66–56, handing LSU its first loss of the season.
