Academy Award nominees named

The nominations for the 97th annual Academy Awards, the most prestigious prizes in the film industry, were announced on January 23. Also known as the Oscars, the awards will recognize the top achievements in film in 2024, including the categories of acting, writing, special effects, and music. The voting process involves more than 9,500 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which includes actors, directors, and producers. The movie musical Wicked received 10 nominations, including best picture. Cynthia Erivo, who played Elphaba, was nominated for best actress, and Ariana Grande, who played Glinda, received a nomination for best supporting actress.
