Europe reaches energy milestone

A report released on January 23 found that the European Union (EU, a group of 27 countries that work and trade together) passed a major climate milestone in 2024, using more solar power than coal for the first time. The EU is trying to move away from fossil fuels like coal and gas, which release greenhouse gases (gases that trap heat in Earth’s atmosphere). The report was written by Ember, a nonprofit focusing on clean energy. Overall, 47% of the EU’s electricity last year was created using renewable resources. Solar panels were responsible for 11% of power generation, up from 9.3% the previous year. Wind power made up 17.4% of all energy.
