Brazil protects Amazon land

Brazil’s president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who is also known as Lula, has signed a decree (order) to create six indigenous reserves, mostly in the Amazon rainforest. Reserves are specially protected areas that belong to indigenous tribes (the descendants of people who lived somewhere before another culture arrived and took over). The decree covers a total area of 6,200 square kilometres. It bans all mining in the reserves and limits the amount of logging (cutting down and harvesting trees) and large-scale farming. As well as protecting the land for indigenous people, the decree will help to combat climate change by keeping large areas of forest safe.
