Space sounds like birds singing For more than 60 years, astronomers have said space sounds like chirping birds. Scientists in Beijing, China, recently studied space radiation known as chorus waves and detected them a lot further from Earth than previously found. The “chirping” is created when electromagnetic radiation (invisible light and radio waves) given off by gas clouds is converted into sound by scientists. Professor Richard Horne, who studies space weather, called the findings “surprising”. Luke Phillips from the RSPB bird charity said the sounds were “reassuring” because birdsong is “a connection to the wider natural world… and even the universe”.
