Wolves might not seem like obvious climate heroes but a new study has found that reintroducing them to the Scottish Highlands could help the planet. Wolves could encourage woodlands to grow, which would absorb more carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that traps the Sun’s heat in the Earth’s atmosphere, causing climate change. Today, there are no wild wolves in the UK. They were wiped out in Scotland more than 250 years ago because humans hunted them. With no wolves left, the number of red deer has soared because there are now no natural predators to kill them. Although this is good for the deer, it’s not so good for Scotland’s woodlands. Red deer like to chew on saplings (young trees), which stops woodlands from growing. Only 4% of Scotland’s land…
