Speaking out for young people

Shane Grant is Lewisham’s new Young Mayor.

On 8 February, 14-year-old Shane Grant was elected to be the Young Mayor for 2025–2026 in Lewisham, south-east London. In this role he will represent young people, bringing their opinions to Lewisham’s council and mayor. He will also be given a budget of £25,000 to spend on the area. Shane tells The Week Junior he “felt really excited” when he found out he’d won the election, which is voted for by young people aged between 11 and 17 who live in Lewisham. He says one of his main goals as Young Mayor is to create business opportunities for young people.
