Sixty years ago, on 25 March 1965, about 2,000 demonstrators arrived in Montgomery, the capital of the US state of Alabama. They had spent five days marching from the city of Selma to demand that black Americans be allowed to vote. A few months later they achieved their goal. It was a huge win for the civil rights movement – action taken by black Americans fighting for equal rights. The movement mainly took place in the 1950s and 1960s and was driven by the discrimination (unfair treatment) of black Americans. How were black people treated badly?
