King penguin

The world’s largest king penguin colony – on an island in the Indian Ocean – has declined by almost 90% since the 1980s. The reason for the drastic drop in numbers remains a mystery, say researchers. ● LIFESPAN IN THE WILD: Up to 26 years. ● HABITAT: King penguins live on several Antarctic and subantarctic (the region directly north of the Antarctic Circle) islands, such as South Georgia, the South Sandwich islands and the Falkland Islands. ● DIET: Fish and squid make up the majority of a king penguin’s diet. ● FUN FACT: King penguins have been known to dive to incredible depths, as far as 300 metres down.
