Meet the man who built the UK’s first zoo without bars.

Last month, a mansion that was home to Chester Zoo founder George Mottershead, his family and lots of wild animals reopened following a £3 million restoration project. The kitchen chairs that had been pecked by pelicans have been removed and a stained-glass window destroyed by a bear has been replaced, but visitors can still see claw marks in the former library where lion cubs were once bottle-fed and left to roam. Mottershead was born near Manchester in 1894. As a boy, he visited a zoo with his family and was distressed to see an elephant with its face pressed up against the bars of its enclosure.
