Record-breaking speedboat returns to Scottish waters

On 4 August, a record-breaking, jet-powered boat called Bluebird took to the water in Scotland for the first time in more than five decades. Bluebird is a hydroplane – a speedboat that, when travelling fast, rises out of the water. In 1967, a man called Donald Campbell used it to try to beat his own water-speed world record of 276mph. Travelling at more than 300mph, the Bluebird crashed and sank, and Campbell died. The vehicle was recovered from the bottom of Coniston Water, a lake in Cumbria, in 2001 and has since been rebuilt.
