AERIAL VIEW British coronations have been held at Westminster Abbey since 1066 and King Charles III will be the 40th reigning monarch to be crowned there. The first documented coronation at Westminster was for William The Conqueror on 25 December 1066, prior to this there had been no fixed location for coronation ceremonies. However, Westminster Abbey is not just a coronation venue, it also houses the tombs of kings and queens, memorials including the shrine of St Edward the Confessor, and has been the setting for 16 royal weddings and numerous other royal occasions. It is also a church dedicated to regular worship but is not classed as a cathedral or parish church, rather ‘Royal Peculiar’ subject only to the sovereign and not to any archbishop or bishop.
