For Caleb Deschanel – a cinematographer with an impressive pedigree in filmmaking – The Lion King represented something of a leap into the unknown. Or so he believed: in fact, many of the techniques and methods Deschanel had spent 40 years perfecting were replicated in the film’s cutting-edge virtual reality space.

The Lion King – The Official Movie Special: As a cinematographer you’re used to working in a more traditional manner. How did Jon Favreau convince you to come on board this very technologically advanced new take on The Lion King? Caleb Deschanel: I wasn’t sure about it at first. I was worried it would be like revisiting calculus class – all math and technology. I loved the story and was excited to work with Jon. But it took a while to warm up to the idea of making a film this way – in virtual reality.
