With its virtual reality sets, the new reimagining of The Lion King has revolutionized filmmaking. The production team have also gone above and beyond in their search for a real-world basis for those VR environments. Production Designer James Chinlund explains the process of location scouting in both the real and virtual worlds.

The Lion King – The Official Movie Special: How does it feel to be involved with such a pioneering production? James Chinlund: This opportunity has been a really exciting one. When I saw The Jungle Book, as a traditional, live-action production designer I suddenly got the sweats. I could see how quickly the technology was advancing and was worried about being left behind. So when the opportunity came to work in this new way, I was so excited about the chance. Being able to control the world to the degree you can in a movie like this is an amazing opportunity.
