As Shenzi, leader of the hyenas, Florence Kasumba found herself tapping into the malevolence of her character – a stark contrast to Eric André, who drew on his improv comedy background to craft the hyena Azizi. But both responded to the hyenas’ newfound power, as well as to the timeless, primal nature of the material.

The Lion King – The Official Movie Special: Florence, were you familiar with the original 1994 animated movie? Florence Kasumba: I remember it well. I actually have the DVD at home. When the movie came out, I was so excited to see it, and of course, I’ve watched it many times since then. Even my kids know it and all the songs. It’s just a really beautiful movie. Eric, were you a fan of the 1994 original? Eric André: Oh yeah, I cried my eyes out. I was a mess. I was 11 when the 1994 version came out. It was a precious time for me.
