> BEFORE CARTER Mazur turned pro, he had never had a significant injury. Now that he’s getting paid to play, his biggest challenge has been avoiding them. Last year, Mazur missed all of training camp and the first month of the AHL season when he sustained an MCL sprain during the Detroit Red Wings’ rookie tournament. This year, after spending the summer in Detroit and adding 13 pounds of muscle under the direction of Wings strength coach Rob Campbell, Mazur was among the final cuts to the roster. But in his third outing with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins, Mazur absorbed a huge open-ice hit and left the game.
