AS MEMBERS OF THE Ukrainian national team lined up along the blueline to hear their anthem as champions of the 2024 Div. I-B men’s World Championship, there was no denying the significance to the athletes. As people, they’d lost so much since Russia invaded the country in February 2022. Ukraine went a perfect 5-0-0, outscoring opponents 31-2 to earn promotion to the 2025 Div. I-A tournament. According to Georgii Zubko, president of the Ice Hockey Federation of Ukraine, however, the win meant more. “This is an important victory not only for our hockey community but for the entire country,” Zubko said. “We continue to fight for our independence at a very high cost: the cost of human lives.
