WITH WISCONSIN locked in a scoreless tie with Ohio State midway through the third period of the NCAA women’s championship game at New Hampshire’s Whittemore Center Arena in March, the Badgers’ Britta Curl found herself on the verge of breaking open the scoring. But Ohio State’s Cayla Barnes had other ideas. As Curl started to accelerate toward the net on a potential breakaway, the Buckeyes defender gave chase. Barnes knocked Curl off the puck, then turned and sent a pass up ice to teammate Hannah Bilka at the far blueline. Bilka, a graduate transfer with an elite shot, could’ve easily played the role of hero by unleashing a quick shot from the right faceoff circle.
