The NHL’s Gaming World Championship descended upon New York City to crown its winner this year. And for the first time, a Canadian came out on top

AFTER BATTLING THROUGH months of competition, several online qualifiers, the North American Championship and three rounds of in-person head-to-head matches, Ethan ‘Polgz’ Kerr-Polgar is the EA Sports NHL 24 world champion. He took the crown after beating Justin ‘Regs’ Reguly in a best-of-three championship series. The NHL launched its inaugural Gaming World Championship back in 2018. The tournament enjoyed two years of growth before the COVID-19 pandemic forced the postponements of the 2020, 2021 and 2022 events. The World Championship returned to in-person competition last year in Nashville, taking place during NHL draft week. This year, the venue shifted to New York City, with the event held at gaming lounge OS NYC. Joining Polgz and Regs at the event were Matthew ‘Gren’ Grenier, Erik ‘Eki’ Tammenpaa, Dany-Karl ‘Deeks’ Levesque and Teemu ‘Temppanen’…
