He was a tough guy through and through during his playing days, but Colton Orr is taking a new tack as a women’s hockey coach

COLTON ORR AMASSED 1,186 penalty minutes in 477 career NHL games. He was a tough guy and then some, spending his career with Boston, the New York Rangers and Toronto. Since his retirement in 2016, Orr has moved to a game where there’s seldom an on-ice fight but one that continues to fight for more. Over the past half-decade, Orr has become one of the premier coaches in professional women’s hockey. This year, that journey has brought the 41-year-old Winnipeg product into the PWHL as an assistant with New York. In 2019, Orr took over as coach of the NWHL’s Connecticut Whale, a role he held until last summer, when the PWHL was born. Only weeks prior, Orr had signed an extension.
